Cirebon - Culture

Cirebon ( pronounced "Cheer-e-bon" ) or in his ancient name Grage is the city in the North Coast of Java Island, close to the border of West Java and Central Java. Because of this, Cirebonese have their own dialects, bearing elements of Sundanese and Javanese.

As a coast city, fishing is an important of traditional way of livelihood. For the big catch of Shrimps, Cirebon is by named Kota Udang or the Shrimp City. Currently, Cirebon expanded his facilities to full fill his roles as a: Harbour City , Industry City, Trade City and Tourism & Cultures City.

Cirebon City is a nice and beautiful city in the North Coast of java Island. Close to the border of West Java and central Java. Most people in Cirebon live from trade sector and work in harbour, government, private sectors as in home industry batiks and rattans, oil industry, automotive industry, cement industry, and as a fisherman as a traditional livelihood.

The region's potential strength is due to Cirebon expanded transport facilities like sea harbour, airport, street network and railway line to and from all important transit towns of Java Island.

Until now Cirebon harbour consists of 3 pools of effective harbour that are used by business ships and a navigation boat with a pier of total length of 1.003,5 meters constructed in an average depth of 3 to 6 metre's. The city is a very important trading place for nurture as well as all sorts of trading goods for the whole of Indonesia.

Trade activities of Cirebon not only reach Java, it's neighbouring city as Indramayu, Jakarta, Semarang and Tegal, and other Indonesia islands but also expanding world wide.

Cirebon is owning a characteristic architecture special to North West Java including some kratons (palace) as historical remains. The Palaces as the centres of this unique culture of Cirebon are still infact and therefore attract every local and world wide visitor.

Cirebon has two major palaces built in 1678, Kraton Kasepuhan and Kraton Kanoman. Near to the palace is the Mesjid Ageng (Grand Mosque), one of the oldest mosque in Java. The tomb of Sunan Gunung Jati at north of Cirebon is frequented by pilgrims. He was one of the nine walis who spread Islam on Java.

KASEPUHAN PALACE: The Kraton or palace, traditionally faced the north, has a large square field with road surrounding it. Formerly, the square used for public gathering and traditional ceremony. Kasepuhan Palace was built in the year of 1529. Behind the Kasepuhan is Cirebon earliest kraton, Pakungwati, built by Prince Cakrabuana the Cirebon's Founder in 1445. The first Kasepuhan Sultan was Sultan Syamsudin. Where as the present is Sultan PRA Maulana Pakuningrat, SH.

KANOMAN PALACE: Kanoman Palace was built in 1588 the first Sultan was Sultan Badriddin. At the present is Sultan Jalaludin. It is within walking distance (around 500 m) of the great mosque "Sang Cipta Rasa", just in back of a bustling market ("Pasar Kanoman"). From the centre of Cirebon City (jalan Karanggetas), it is only 100 meter.
