Surat - Culture

Surat is a city that is poor in historical places and natural sights, but rich in riches. Flooded with business and industries, it is a city with peace and maximum prosperity. Recently selected amongst the cleanest one, Surat owes a healthy share in the exports of Diamond and Textile products. 

The Historical Fort of Surat was built in year 1540 - 41 by Khudawand Khan primary with a view to protect the city from the foreign aggression it is an ancient monument constructed during the 16th century. The fort was built in with solid bricks, stones and lime. The width of the wall was 4,06 meters. It is constructed at the bank of river Tapi. It is adjacent to Hope Bridge. At present many government offices are functioning this premises.

The 14th century Old Fort houses Government Offices today. During its hey days, the fort was invaded twice by Chhatrpati Shivaji Maharaj.

The ancient Port City of Muglisara was where Sir Thomas Roe landed when he came to India as King James Ambassador to the Court of Emperor Jehangir. During the Mughal Regime, Surat was the main port of departure for pilgrims to Mecca. The Mugusarali is the huge travellers inn where Haj Pilgrims user to stay. Today, this building is user as the Surat Muncipal Corporation Building.

Jawaharlal Nehru Garden - Surat's Chowpatty is located on the banks of the river Tapi at athivalines. Frequented by all, its major attractions are the well laid out gardens that provide respite from daily schedules.

The Dutch Cemetry is located near Kataragam Gate, this impressive mausoleum is that of Baron Adrian Van Reede who passed away in 1691. A massive Dome, beautiful pillars and the huge gallery make it a very outstanding monument.

The sunny beaches & seaside resorts of Dumas & Hajira are a few kilometres out of Surat and must be included in the itinerary by all visitors looking forward to some relaxation. Ubharat is situated at about 42 km from Surat and has a beautiful, sandy beach with a backdrop of shady palm groves. If you go there don't forget your swimming suits because resisting the beach of Ubharat is too tough. Going in deep water of Ubharat is strictly prohibited. Tithal is situated 108 km from Surat and 5 km from Valsad on the Mumbai-Vadodara Western Railway. Tithal has also got a beautiful sandy beach and dipping here is much safer than Ubharat.

Aquacity is situated 23 km from Surat Railway station and is behind Kamrej Sugar Factory. The beautiful water park having extra ordinary thrilling rides with a beautiful garden and restaurant. BJS World is another Water Park which is a must visit. About 40 km From Surat, the water park is also known for its shad palm graves and a fine sandy beach.

Joy n Joy is situated 28 km from railway station near Gai Pagla mandir road. There are many heart stopping rides and lots of rides for children too.
