Nagpur - Culture

Nagpur is one of the most happening cities in today's times. Strategically located in the Deccan Plateau, this magnificent city has been termed as the winter capital of Maharashtra. The neighbours of this district are Bhandardara on the east, Amaravati and Wardha to the west and Chandrapur to the south. To the north, this district shares boundaries with the state of Madhya Pradesh. Nagpur forms the second capital of Maharashtra and is also termed as the orange city.

Nagpur is one of the key industrial and business city, today, as it plays abode to many coalmines, thermal power plants. It has a lion's share in producing cotton. The city gets its name from the river Nag that flows through this land. It is a famous land amongst the Buddhists. Believed to be the geographical and logical hub of India, it also forms an important railway junction.

Fashion, as someone once said, is something that comes in one year and goes out the other. Well, that holds good even today, although the fashion scene in Nagpur is very different from that in Mumbai or Delhi. Trends, such as they are, are mostly imported from the metros and often take a while to catch on. This is not to say that Nagpur lacks fashion consciousness - it certainly has its share of trendy people!

The Ram Janmotsav Shobhayatra is celebrated with very high spirit since last 32 Years in Nagpur, at Shri Poddareshwar Ram Mandir. This temple was built in the year 1923, the marble and sandstone Carving work of temple is very beautiful and is of the level of moguls Sculpture.

Situated in Civil Lines, the museum has been renovated and is open to the public after quite a long gap. It houses historical artefacts and is worth a look.

One of the old attractions of Nagpur is Maharajbagh. Even though there are relatively few animals here nowadays, the place is still good for a day's outing as the place is green and pleasant. It is in severe need of maintenance as this would help to restore its old popularity.

Ambazari is situated in the western outskirts of the city. The Ambajhari Lake (spreads over 15.4 sq km) is surrounded by a picturesque garden. It is a good place to go for morning & evening walks. Boating facilities are available. Another attraction is the musical fountain. The proposed water park along the lines of Essel World, Mumbai, should do a lot to increase Ambazari's popularity.

Telangkhedi Lake and Garden is another site which could do with some extra maintenance, though there have been some efforts by the locals in this direction. The lake is situated in a verdant and peaceful area and also has a temple, which is extremely popular.

Pench National Park is situated around 86 km from Nagpur, this National Park is a place good for a day's visit. It is built around the Pench Irrigation project, a joint venture of the Maharashtra and MP Governments. This park is also known as Jawaharlal Nehru Udyan.

Nagzira is wildlife sanctuaries spread over 136 km. Animals you can spot include tigers, bison, nilgai, barking deer and panthers. It is around 132 km from Nagpur.
